Digital fire door registers vs paper records: an honest comparison

Our earlier piece on why a fire door register matters made the case for keeping one at all. This one is narrower: given that a register is needed, is paper genuinely a problem, or is it a perfectly reasonable format that's been unfairly maligned by software vendors with an obvious interest in the answer?

The real advantage of a digital register isn't that it's digital for its own sake — it's that it can surface which doors are overdue without anyone manually scanning a log, attach photo evidence directly to a specific defect, and roll up into portfolio-wide reporting automatically rather than requiring manual collation across separate site registers. Those are genuine capability gains, not just a format change.

What digital doesn't fix on its own

It's worth being honest that a digital register doesn't fix a bad checking routine — if the underlying checks aren't happening consistently, digitising the record just produces a more polished record of the same gap. The format change matters most once the checking discipline is already reasonably solid and the limiting factor has become organising and reporting on the resulting data, not performing the checks themselves.
